Abstract

Many primary care physicians are using ultrasonography (US) for diagnosis and treatment of health problems. The migration of ultrasound from radiology departments to other specialties and the availability of smaller, less-expensive systems to primary care providers has been observed. Point-of-care ultrasound is getting a lot of attention these days. The benefits of point-of-care ultrasound are many such as a quick screen for stones, ectopic pregnancy, abdominal aortic aneurysm, as well as vascular access, obstetric exams, and measuring bladder volume. Training in US is a critical issue. Although most specialists have been exposed to ultrasound within their residency programs, there are now many opportunities for primary care physicians to receive training. Multiple teaching and assessment modalities for all 4 years of medical school should be discussed because their ultrasound experience enhances their medical education and preparation for work in primary care.
